The current issue with the internet age is that there is just too much junks out there. It's difficult for a layman to differentiate between what is credible and what is a marketing hype.

Step 1: Read more about acne or pimples from credible websites.

Before you continue to read and trust any information from the internet, it's important to know the credibility of the information out there. One quick way is to check the Alexa ranking of the website.

To know more about How to Determine Website Credibility - How to determine website credibility.

What is acne? Acne, or acne vulgaris, is a skin problem that starts when oil and dead skin cells clog up your pores. Some people call it blackheads, blemishes, whiteheads, pimples, or zits.

Most cases of acne fit within one of three main categories:

Comedonal acne. This is the kind of mild acne that involves blackheads and whiteheads. It forms because a component of skin oil called sebum, along with old skin cells, block the pores of the skin. Comedonal acne appears most often on the forehead, nose, and chin.

Inflammatory acne. This form of acne occurs when the area just under the “plug” (the blackhead or whitehead) becomes reddened and inflamed.

Cystic acne. The most severe form of acne, cystic acne develops as the result of an actual infection in the area of the outbreak. Cystic acne often runs in families. It’s often very painful and can result in disfiguring, permanent scarring.

Check out a layperson summary of the acne treatment guidelines from the Malaysian Ministry of Health: Summary of the Ministry of Health Acne Treatment guidelines.

Some highlights:

Risk Factors for Acne:
i. Smoking
ii. Stress
iii. Facial therapy or salon facial massage

Don’t worry, you didn’t get it wrong. Yes, salon facial massage is a risk factor. If you have acne and are going for regular facial, please stop.

Step 2: Consult your local pharmacist

How to get rid of pimples in Malaysia - If your acne is mild, do consult and discuss with your nearest pharmacist (at Guardian, Caring, Watsons etc.) for recommendations on acne treatment products.
  • Topical therapy is the mainstay of treatment for mild acne. It is also useful for moderate acne where comedones are predominant. It plays an important role in induction of remission and maintenance phases of the treatment.
  • There are a variety of preparations available. The commonly used agents are topical benzoyl peroxide (BPO), retinoids and antibiotics. Newer agents available are fixed combination preparations of these agents.
  • Topical retinoids are to be avoided during pregnancy.
Topical anti-acne products available in Malaysia include OXY 5% and OXY 10% as well as Benzac AC 5% by Galderma.

Benzoyl peroxide - By eliminating dead skin cells and unclogging oil-polluted pores. Brands use benzoyl peroxide as a go-to ingredient that speeds up the process, by using oxygen to
detoxify pores and release sebum build-up.

Laser Treatments for Acne Scars

In one to three sessions, laser skin resurfacing using fractionated laser technology can even out the skin surface and increase the formation of new collagen. Collagen is a protein that's a building block of the skin. The new collagen can help fill in acne scars.

The acne scars laser treatment involves the technique of laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing procedure not only treats acne scars but also gives you a glowing and younger looking skin. In general, CO2 lasers are the gold standard when it comes to treating scars, wrinkles and photo-rejuvenation. It’s also not uncommon for most people to try completely ineffective methods, from DIY home treatments to beauty spa facials and underpowered lasers.

Dermal Filler Treatments for Acne Scars

Dermal Filler injections can help fill in the indentations left behind from deep acne scars. But the downside to fillers is that they need to be repeated every 4 to 6 months, as the product reabsorbs into the skin over time.

How to Prevent Scars or Help Scars Heal
  • Stay out of the sun. Exposing scars to the sun can cause them to darken and slow the healing process. Ultraviolet rays stimulate melanocytes (pigment-producing cells), leading to further discoloration.
  • Before heading outdoors, put on a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Reapply after swimming, after sweating, and after more than 2 hours in the sun.
  • Don't pick and squeeze. Scars, which are made mainly of collagen, are your body's way of repairing itself. Acne scars are typically indented because of collagen loss from intense inflammation.
  • Picking leads to more inflammation and injury of your skin, which add to the discoloration and scarring. Squeezing or trying to pop a pimple causes pus and bacteria to filter deeper into the skin, bringing on more collagen damage.
  • Don't use vitamin E on scars. You may have heard that applying vitamin E to a scar will help it heal faster. But according to a study from the University of Miami, applying the nutrient directly onto a scar can actually hinder its healing. In the study, vitamin E either had no effect or made matters worse for 90% of the patients, and 33% who put vitamin E on the skin developed a contact dermatitis.

Step 2: Consult a Skin Specialist or Visit an Aesthetic Clinic

If your acne scars don't fade away on their own, it may be time to consider booking an appointment with your dermatologist or your local aesthetic clinic.

MEDIVIRON UOA CLINIC: REVIEW OF FRACTIONAL CO2 LASER 1
I have decided to have my very first try on Fractional CO2 Laser after my last week consultation on Mediviron UOA Clinic (You can read back my post at here). Christmas Day is coming very soon but my face still keep on "pop out" pimples non-stop and sometime acne marks just so annoying. So, I chose to try the Fractional Laser Resurfacing (It is a new technology which promises to deliver results approaching that of deep chemical peels / ablative laser resurfacing, without the discomfort and inconvenience of a lengthy healing period) for an obvious result.
